Demo vs Live Trading: Why the Same EA Shows Different Results

Sep 15, 2026· 8 min read

The same EA can look excellent on demo and behave differently on a live account. The gap is normal — but only some of it is acceptable. This article explains where the difference comes from and what actually proves a system works.

Why demo and live are not the same market

A demo account gives you perfect conditions: instant fills, wide spreads or none, no requotes. A live account is real execution — variable spreads, slippage, broker latency, weekend gaps. The strategy logic is identical; the environment is not.

Which differences are normal — and which are warning signs

Small differences are normal: slightly fewer wins, a few extra pips of slippage, an occasional missed entry during news. Big differences are not: a profitable demo turning consistently negative live, rules behaving randomly, or results that change with every broker. The first is the market; the second is a system problem.

Backtest, demo, live: three layers of evidence

A backtest shows the logic works in historical data. A demo shows it runs on a modern platform. Only live shows it survives real execution, real spreads and real conditions — 24/7, with nobody watching. Each layer is useful; the last one is the one that counts.

What 1+ year live actually proves

MOM EA has been trading live for over a year — the same rules, the same risk logic, 100% automated with no human intervention. That is not a screenshot; it is a record that spans market conditions you cannot cherry-pick.

The numbers behind the system

MOM Mode 4, backtested on XAUUSD, H1, January–September 2026, generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention: 250 trades, 78.4% win rate, max drawdown 18.6%, profit factor 2.10, starting $500 → $5,851 (+1,070%). A backtest is the floor — live trading is the test the floor has to survive.

The honest path from demo to live

If a system passes all four, the demo-to-live gap is just the market being honest with you. If it fails, better to know on a small account.

Decision: trust the record, not the screenshot

Demo results tell you the logic can run. Live results tell you it can survive. Judge every EA the same way: with a record, not with a promise. That is the difference between gambling on a story and running a system.

MOM EA has been live for over 1 year, running 7×24 fully automated. Backtest data on this page was generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention and does not constitute a promise of profit. Trading involves real risk.
