One vendor sells an EA that trades EURUSD and never looks exciting. Another sells a gold EA that doubles in a year. The instrument is not a detail — it decides whether your EA has a trend to follow or just chop to survive.
Why the instrument decides the strategy
An expert advisor is only as good as the behaviour of the instrument it trades. A trend-following system needs sustained moves; a mean-reversion system needs tight ranges. Selling you a 'trend EA' that actually trades a choppy pair is like selling a snow tyre for the desert — the product and the road do not match.
Gold: strong trends, honest swings
XAUUSD trends for weeks when real money moves into safe havens, and it moves with real size. That is exactly the environment a trend-following EA with a trailing stop is built for: it can ride a move for days without being shaken out by noise. The trade-off is that gold also has deep pullbacks, so the drawdown is visible — and a vendor hiding it is hiding the whole point.
Majors: calm, efficient, hard to beat
EURUSD, GBPUSD and USDJPY are the most liquid, most analysed markets on earth. Spreads are tight, but the edge is thin because everyone is watching the same chart. An EA on a major can look smooth for a while and then stall, because there is no big trend to extract — only noise, which the spread slowly eats.
The trap: a pretty curve on the wrong instrument
Many backtest curves look beautiful because the vendor picked the instrument and period where the system happened to shine. Ask which instrument the EA is designed for, not just which curve it shows. A system built for gold should not be quietly sold as a 'forex EA'.
The numbers from a gold-built system
MOM Mode 4, built and run on XAUUSD, H1, January–September 2026, in 100% automated mode with no human intervention: 250 trades, 78.4% win rate, max drawdown 18.6%, profit factor 2.10, starting $500 → $5,851 (+1,070%). It was built for gold's trends, not reverse-engineered onto a pair.
Before you buy: three instrument checks
- Does the vendor name the exact instrument (XAUUSD, not just 'metals')?
- Does the live record match the instrument in the sales page?
- Is the drawdown consistent with that instrument's real volatility?
If all three line up, the system and the market are actually made for each other.
Decision: match the EA to the instrument it was built for
Do not buy a 'gold result' and run it on EURUSD, and do not buy a 'forex EA' and hope it handles a gold trend. Pick the instrument the system was designed for, accept its real drawdown, and leave it to run 24×7.
