How to Choose a Forex EA: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Pay

Sep 11, 2026· 8 min read

Every week, thousands of traders pay for a forex EA because the landing page looks amazing. Three months later, most of them are back where they started — only poorer. The difference between a good EA and a bad one is almost never the headline. It is whether the vendor can answer seven boring questions.

Q1. How long is the live track record?

A backtest is a simulation. A live record is time that actually happened. The single most reliable signal of a serious EA is a live track record measured in months, not weeks. If a system has run 24/7 for over a year, it has survived real spreads, real slippage, real weekends and real market shifts. If the vendor cannot show you live results, ask why.

Q2. How was the backtest generated?

Some vendors hand-pick the best weeks of a backtest and call it "the strategy". Some optimize a system until it fits the past perfectly — then it fails the moment the market changes. Ask one question: was this backtest generated in fully automated mode with no human intervention? A straight answer says more than any curve.

Q3. What is the maximum drawdown?

Every real strategy has a drawdown. If a page never mentions one, the vendor is hiding the most important risk number. Ask to see the worst period on the equity curve, and compare it to how much risk you are comfortable with. A controlled drawdown you can plan around is better than a zero-drawdown promise that is a lie.

Q4. Win rate and profit factor — together

Any single number can be cherry-picked. A 95% win rate with tiny wins and rare huge losses is a martingale in disguise. Look for win rate and profit factor reported together, with the drawdown that came with them. For reference: MOM Mode 4 shows a 78.4% win rate with a 2.10 profit factor — high, but believable, because it is reported with its drawdown.

Q5. Does it run 24/7 without me?

An EA exists so you do not sit at the screen. Check whether it trades fully automatically: no manual signals, no "press this button every hour", no requiring you to watch. A real automated system runs through the night, through your work day, through your sleep — and moves stop loss and take profit on its own.

Q6. How does it control risk?

Ask what happens when a trade goes against you. Does the system use stop loss? Does it trail the stop to protect profit? Trend-following systems win less often but let profits run — that only works when losses are strictly cut. Risk control is not a feature, it is the difference between surviving a bad month and losing the account.

Q7. Is it built to follow the trend or to fit the past?

Markets trend, consolidate, and trend again. A system built on one perfect historical pattern dies when the pattern changes. A trend-following approach adapts because it reacts to price structure, not to a memorized history. Ask which one you are buying — and remember that "fits the past perfectly" is the least durable trait a strategy can have.

The seven checks that separate a real automated system from a marketing page. MOM passes all seven: 1+ year live, 100% automated, 24/7, trailing stop and take profit, trend following, published backtest data, no babysitting required. Backtest data generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention.

Seven questions is a lot of work before you spend money. But it takes ten minutes, and it separates a serious system from a landing page. Here is what a system that answers all seven looks like, with real numbers.

What "passes all seven" looks like

MOM flagship Mode 4, backtested on XAUUSD (gold), H1, January–September 2026, generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention:

  • 250 trades, starting balance $500 → ending $5,851 (+1,070%)
  • Win rate 78.4% with profit factor 2.10, reported together
  • Max drawdown 18.6% — published, not hidden
  • 24×7 fully automated, no human intervention required
  • Trailing stop and trailing take profit on every position, trend following
  • Live track record of 1+ year

You do not need to take anyone’s word for these numbers. That is the entire point of the checklist: every claim should be checkable. Time is the part that cannot be faked.

Your move

Apply the seven questions to any EA you are considering. If the vendor dodges even one of them, walk away. If every answer is public, verifiable and measured in years, you have found something rare — and that is exactly the kind of system worth a serious look.

MOM EA has been live for 1+ year and runs 7×24 fully automated. Backtest data on this page was generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention and is not a promise of future profit. Trading involves real risk.

You have the checklist. Now check the record

MOM publishes its backtest data, drawdown and 1+ year live record openly — every number on this checklist is verifiable on ea.mql5.mom.
