Win Rate vs Risk Reward: Which One Actually Makes You Money?

Sep 10, 2026· 7 min read

Scroll through any EA marketplace and you will see the same headline: "90% win rate!" It sounds unbeatable. The uncomfortable truth is that a 90% win rate is often the first sign of a scam — and a 55% win rate can quietly make you far more money. This article shows you the math, and what to look at instead.

Why a 90% win rate is usually a warning sign

Win rate alone says nothing about how much you win or lose per trade. A system that wins 90% of the time can still lose money if the 10% losses are many times bigger than the 90% wins. That pattern — tiny wins, rare huge losses — is the classic signature of martingale and grid strategies. They look amazing for months, then one bad week erases everything.

This is why vendors advertise win rate and never show you the equity curve during a drawdown. A real strategy is judged by three numbers together: win rate, risk-to-reward ratio, and profit factor.

The one equation that matters

Expectancy per trade is roughly:

  • Win rate × average win − loss rate × average loss

Run the two systems below. One wins 90% of trades but risks $10 to make $1. The other wins 55% and risks $1 to make $2. Over 100 trades they both end up almost the same place — and the second one survives the inevitable losing streaks far better.

So the question is never "how often does it win?" The question is "what happens to my account when it is wrong?" That is controlled by risk management: where the stop loss goes, how much is risked, and whether the EA moves the stop to protect profit.

Two systems, same balance growth — but one shows 90% win rate and the other 55%. The number you celebrate says less than the math behind it. MOM data: backtest generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention.

The comparison above is the whole point in one picture: the headline number you are sold is far less important than how losses are handled.

Real numbers from a real automated system

Flagship Mode 4, backtested on XAUUSD (gold), H1, January–September 2026, generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention:

  • 78.4% win rate and 2.10 profit factor together
  • 250 trades, starting balance $500 → ending $5,851 (+1,070%)
  • Max drawdown 18.6%
  • Trailing stop and trailing take profit on every position, run 24×7 with no human intervention

A win rate of 78.4% is high but not absurd — which is exactly why it is believable. No vendor needs to promise you 95% to sell this system; the combination of win rate, profit factor and controlled drawdown does the talking.

What to ask about any EA

  • Show me the drawdown period. A real strategy has one. Ask to see the worst week on the equity curve.
  • Show me win rate AND profit factor together. Either one alone can be cherry-picked.
  • Show me the live record. Backtests can be faked; time cannot. MOM EA has been running live for over a year.
MOM EA has been live for 1+ year and runs 7×24 fully automated. Backtest data on this page was generated in 100% automated mode with no human intervention and is not a promise of future profit. Trading involves real risk.
